WHO NEEDS VISION THERAPY

Learn to Read

Learning

Vision therapy is safe, drug-free, and effective for both children and adults! While visual acuity (the "20/20" part of vision) requires glasses to improve, visual skills such as tracking together along a line of text must be learned during development, these skills can also be improved later in life at any age.

It is estimated that 1 in 10 children have a vision problem severe enough to affect their learning in school, but school vision screenings can miss up to half of these problems. A comprehensive vision exam with a developmental optometrist checks all aspects of eye health, vision, and visual skills, and can ensure you or your child is not struggling unnecessarily with an undiagnosed vision problem.

Therapy can enhance everyone’s lives by helping a struggling student learn. In order to be successful with vision therapy, the participant needs to have a goal and be willing to invest time and energy in working with their doctor and/or therapist to achieve this goal.

Lazy (Amblyopia)/Turned (Strabismic) eyes

A lazy eye, called Amblyopia, results when one eye doesn’t receive a quality visual image due to a large prescription difference between the eyes, or a misalignment of the eyes (strabismus). As a result of receiving a blurry image from one eye, the brain adapts to actively suppress that eye in order to avoid double vision and/or confusion. Vision Therapy is often very successful in this group of patients, as patching or surgery alone does not treat the root of the problem. Vision therapy acts by breaking the active suppression of the poorer seeing eye by training the brain to use both eyes as a team. Functionally these patients will have a better appreciation of depth of space, will develop better hand-eye coordination and will also see improvements in their coordination and sports performance.

TBI/Concussion

Complex neuro pathways control the vision system and can be adversely affected when a person has a brain injury such as from a stroke or concussion. A variety of symptoms can be experienced from light sensitivity, to double vision, to sensorimotor spatial disorganization. Vision therapy is highly individualized for these people and is focused on rehabilitation so that normal function can resume.

Sports

Vision guides action and thus is very important for the success of many athletes. Sports vision therapy is individualized for the athlete’s sport of choice depending on the specific demands of their sport. Areas that are focused on include: hand-eye coordination, dynamic visual acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, tracking and focus ability. Professional athletes in a variety of sports have used vision therapy to bring their game to the next level.

Eye movement and tracking

This is very important and necessary for reading and sports and every day life.It is a lot easier to move the eyeballs freely of head bopping when reading. Kids having difficulty staying focused may need vision therapy to help with central peripheral awareness.

VISION THERAPY PROCESS

VISION THERAPY ASSESSMENT

A functional binocular vision assessment is done to identify what ocular dysfunctions you have

Testing takes 2 hours but might be longer depending on each individual and how weak the binocular system is.

We book 1 hour slots and so testing would involve multiple visits to the  practise

The following tests would be done

  • Ocular Motility which is also called Eye Tracking and measures fast, small eye movements called saccades, and smooth, fluid movements called pursuits.

  • Vergence Testing  to determine how the eyes turn in convergence, and turn out (divergence). A measurement of how quickly this happens would be done as well.

  • Accommodation Testing to test the ability of the eye to focus up close and also how quickly the eyes can switch from far to near

  • Visual Discrimination – The ability to see similarities from differences.

  • Visual Memory – The ability to visually remember the characteristics of a shape/object after a brief presentation.

  • Visual Spatial Relationships – The ability to see the difference among forms based on orientation.

  • Visual Sequential Memory – The ability to remember a series of forms in their specific order of presentation.

  • Visual Figure-Ground – The ability to perceive a form visually, and to find this form hidden in a clutter of a distracting background.

  • Visual Directionality – The ability to identify language symbols based on their directional orientation.

  • Visual Motor Integration – The ability to analyze visual information and reproduce the response in a paper and pencil task.

  • Visually Directed Gross Motor Function – The ability to effectively integrate the two halves of the body.

  • Visual-Vestibular Integration – The ability to integrate the visual system and the vestibular system.

  • Baseline Reading Tests – Standardized testing of word recognition and fluency.

OUR VISION THERAPY ASSESSMENT TESTING CHECKS ALL OF THESE

Most people don’t realize that you need 17 visual skills
to succeed in reading, learningsports, and in life!

The ability to move both eyes together to point at an intended target or follow along a path, like a line of text

Forming a clear image of something in the distance

  •  Sustaining Focus at Far

Keeping an image of something in the distance clear

Forming a clear image of something close to the eyes

  •  Sustaining Focus at Near

Keeping a clear image of something close to the eyes

  •   Simultaneous Alignment at Far

Lining up both eyes at the same point the distance

  •  Sustaining Alignment at Far

Holding both eyes lined up at the same point in the distance

  •  Simultaneous Alignment at Near

Lining up both eyes at the same point up close

  •   Sustaining Alignment at Near

Holding both eyes lined up at the same point up close

  •   Central Vision (Visual Acuity)

This is where "20/20" vision comes in!

  •   Peripheral Vision

Being able to see what's on either side of you while your eyes are pointed forward

Being able to tell that things are further away or closer up than each other (also know as depth perception)

  •  Color Perception

Being able to tell different colors apart (if you are not color-blind)

  •  Gross Visual-Motor

Moving yourself through space without bumping into things by using information from your vision

  •  Fine Visual-Motor

Writing, sewing, texting, and doing other small and close-up activities with accuracy by using information from  your vision

  •   Visual Perception

Being aware of your environment and what is going on around you in your visual field (the area you can see)

Bringing together your vision and your other senses to accomplish complex tasks, like reading while walking a balance beam

AFTER VISION THERAPY ASSESSMENT WHAT NEXT?

The Optometrist provides a detailed report and explains the findings and what they imply. You will be given a welcome package and duration of therapy sessions.

Treatment is individualized one-on-one weekly sessions. This would be with our trained vision therapists and doctor. There will be daily homework activities assigned to be practiced for 15-20 minutes, to last till the next vision therapy session.

Every program length depends on each patient and their specific visual needs. Programs can last from 20 weeks to a year or more. The number of sessions, the amount of home work, and the duration of the program depends on the severity of the problem, the goals of the patient, their age, and their commitment and participation level in the program.

Vision therapy is not simply a set of activities you do. The more you are actively involved in the visual experience, the more it becomes part of you and becomes you.
